Ane gave me a great idea about presenting administrators site through Ane’s third lecture. Before the lecture, I was planning to use opensource, which are PHP and MySQL. But during the lecture I come across the CMS (Content Management System), which available to use as a back-end template that was rather make sense. So, I have looked for information about it and I easily found a huge amount of information. Our client needs some kind of data management system that is why we decided to develop a back-end site for Elite employees. If there is a ready made web CMS based on opensource then why not use it. We can use it just like any other opensources. CMS marketplaces offer us specific solutions as well. This allows our client to manage data such as add, delete and modify content or data.

What is a Content Management System (CMS)?

A Content Management System (CMS) is a combination of large database, File System, and other related software modules, which are used to store and later retrieve huge amounts of data.

Connectivity and accessibility

Connectivity

Make sure the end users’ computer meets the minimum system requirements. If the end users’ computer doesn’t match up to most of these requirements, the users may have problems in using the Elite web site. It is really important to prove the most common browsers support XML. We are planning to use Flash MX, which is standalone application however Flash MX generates XML, which can interact with database server. So whether the common browsers support XML is the issue.
For most of part, XML users will be using a standard Internet Browser. The major browsers that have announced XML support include Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Navigator 5 as well as Mozilla 1.x, Opera 7.11 and AOL 8.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5

Microsoft took the lead in the browser world in terms of its support of the standards-based XML. It has the best implementation of XML in its browser as compared to any other vendor. Internet Explore includes complete support with XML DOM and support of the transformation tools of XSL. However, it does not fully support the CSS, which is thought to be the best way of displaying XML data in a browser.

Netscape Navigator 5

Netscape support of XML comes in its browser engine called Gecko.

Accessibility

I think it is important to consider in the earlier stage of the development whether the web site that we made accessible to everybody. A highly accessible design will meet the requirements of users with physical or technical difficulties. Good clear design will make content easy to read. Use resizable text and Alt tags (screen tips) for all images. We already considered using resizable text and selectable text.

However, I found a problem that only using flash site not appropriate for epilepsy.
Solution for this problem could solve by provides only text site along with flash version site but I am not sure whether we need to put an effort to provide HTML version site for this project.

I've been working out the budget for the project and it looks like we're just below budget (even with the e-commerce option).
I've also created the actual time-table for each member of the development team.

After re-viewing the yearly company budget, it looks like we need to borrow £30K from Venture Capital and the daily rate for the company is now £700. Therefore, we can effectively work for 64 days on the project if we want to stay within our 25% profit margin.

I will be putting together a list of reasons about the Return on investment (ROI) for the client.

Very complex navigations and networks, it combines all the information about Elite and the things Elite wants to tell to his customers. Compare to the other car garage sites, it is more detailed, comprehensive and colorful, and easy for user to find interesting way to use the site.

- Dynamic flash site: special in creating and making high-tech website.
- Video or 2D Animation: Through the movie images, users can learn the organization and size of Elite. Compare to the still image, it is flash and active and let users remember deeper.

I investigated the domain names that we are going to let our client know which domain name suit their needs. We suggest a domain name that can represent our client business market. The top-level domains (TDL), which include .com, are considered to be global domains as they are not country specific. The next option is, 7 additional top level, which includes biz, info. The last option that can choose a country code second level domain names such as.co.uk. org.uk, .net.uk etc. National domain name registries such as Nominate in the UK administer these country code domain names. However, the .eu domain name for EU is not available at the moment.

These domain names are available to use which we consider to use for Elite site.

www.elitecars.ch, which appeal to Switzerland market where the main Elite customers live.

Marketing of our company
I think our company will be very small and smart, only 5 people (we all know the design and technique works, but one is sepcial manager of whole company, one works in Finacial, one person works in Marketing)
Our work can do CD/DVD, Web design, content management or any other project about multimedia.
Our project right schdule dates will be 55 days to do this project and start another project, because Markus and I found if we could finish that day on time, we could get 25% profit through this project, but we will tell our clients more days to finish.

Technical realisation and technologies

I've been researching the different technologies we might need for the production of the product.

In our meeting with the client, we learned, that the client does not have any knowledge or any intention of learning MS Access. The client is however familiar with the web and it's common standards.

Therefore, I propose for the administration of the website to be developed using PHP and a MySQL database.
This will obviously result in a more expensive hosting, but will facilitate the administration of the website.

Another reason for us to opt for a UNIX server is the fact that PHP and MySQL would also be used to run the actual website.
This can be done by using Flash to incorporate PHP and XML code, which then looks up content in the database, which would then be parsed back to the Flash movie using receiving XML objects. sounds really complicated, but as far as I know it can be realised without any major problems.

This is a visual interface that is commonly used to create and managed databases and very easy to use. And as far as I know, it is free!

I think that this should enable us to produce the product in the way that we planned.

The SitePal Virtual Agent is apparently able to Speak English, French and German (all female voices) and as it is developed in Flash, it should be able to incorporate it into another Flash Site.
On http://www.sitepal.com, it also says that one of the agent's main features is that it can communicate with any backend programming language (including PHP).

So, from the technical site, I think we're ok, even though the actual development of all of this might take quite long.

Legal issues

I have researched legal issues because I think it is important to consider during the development of a web site as a company. We may not need to address this issue until the pitch but we may state on design sketch or mock-up that shows our client our concern.

All copyright, related legal issues, and any relevant rules for the use of the website. Also, it comes with terms of use statement. Basically, copyright protects content. Also, I have researched database protection law as we are planning to provide our client a content management system. According to my research, one of the most important legal issues on the Internet is privacy. So that the organization will require a very clear statement on how it collects information on its customers and what it does with that information. (Source from Content critical)

I want to let every team members know about legal stuff that I found from the Internet.

1. Q: Do you only sell parts which will be fitted by you in the garage, or do you also sell the parts for customers to fit themselves?

A: We occasionally sell parts for the customers to fit themselves, generally if it is a rare model and the customer is an enthusiast that likes to work on the care themselves.
Most of the time the parts are sold to customers who then bring the parts in to be fitted, we like to encourage this as we like to see our customers and it adds to the sense of community.

2. Q: What domain extension do you want? .com, .eu ?

A: We don't know about this, we need you to choose/recommend a domain extension for us. Is there an .eu domain. A .ch would be appropriate for Switzerland. Also we'd like 'Elite' to be part of the name, but you can add something fun to it.

3. Q: Do you know Microsoft Access, we may use it to develop your database. If your technical department doesnâ€™t know it, would you like us to teach your members?

A: NO!. We use Excel, we call it a 'log' . We use it to enter info, rather than 'create' anything. We don't want to deal with any databases or have to learn anything. We can fill out forms, input info, but it needs to be user freindly.

4. Q: Do you need us to translate the site into German and French, or would you provide us with the translated content?

A: The garage has all the languages so its possible we could provide translated content, but we need you to advise us on this. German is the strongest language, we think we'd like this to be the 1st the site is made in.

5. Q: Do you have phosographs of your cars, or do you want us to come over and take pictures of the cars / provide pictures of the cars for you?

A: One of our staff memebers is a professional photographer with a keen interest in car photography, he will be supplying the photos of our cars.

6. Q: What is the competition area for?

A: We wouldn't give away a car, but would give away a service. It would be to increase interaction with customers. We'd consider having some involvement with racing.

7. Q: What is the time frame for the product production?

A: We don't know how long web sites take to make. It'd be good to have it done by Christmas. Or if your fast by the Summer. Definitly by next summer.

8. Q: Do you have connectivity , what kind?

A: Yes, fast connection.

We made a process followed by a lot of research. We are going to provide our client a high standard web site, which incorporate with a database system based on opensource CMS. From the technical point of view, we are planning to divide the web site into two sections. One is the front-end interface provides users (Elite customers) a high standard web experience made in Flash MX. The other is a user-friendly site offers the back-end users (Elite employees) with a CMS (Content Management System).

Integrating Macromedia Flash MX site with databases is the key issue that fit in the client needs and demands. The question of Flash remoting needs to consider respectively.

How we can create PHP environment?

We are setting up PHP environment using Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP for the Elite web site to create a reliable and well-designed web site. The LAMP model, which is stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL , and PHP is increasingly used in advanced technology companies. These open source tools provide a world-class platform for web applications.

How we manage the web server and what connectivity do they offer?

We are going to host the web server from DEDIPOWER, which can offer us achieve extremely high levels of resilience and performance.

To sum up, using Macromedia Flash MX enables to control data using Flash components. So that we are able to provide a high standard flash site for Elite customer while administrators who are employees of Elite car as a car salesman will able to manage database system through a user-friendly web site.

Technical side issues

I have researched about different database systems. I come up with ERP while I was reading the book called Managing information – IT for business process. It seemed to me that worthwhile to know about those kinds of concept because business processes invariably involve several different business functions. For instance, involves across sales, accounts, stock control, and dispatch even in our project. The ERP which is enterprising resources planning is a kind of integrate whole business process to save money and effort. However, I don’t think this project require us to consider broader issues at the same time I am not sure about our budget for this. Anyway, I think it is definitely worthwhile to looking at it.

Additionally, I found that ASP.net programming language could access to a database system through Microsoft Access. If our client needs a user-friendly data management system, it rather easy to manage through Microsoft Access as most of people is familiar with Microsoft product.

Technical research

We had the group meeting to discuss our progression and individual research. As a technical director, I need to give my opinion and advice during the project whether the team decision is feasible in terms of technical aspects. There is no doubt that there are numerous technical issues involved in this project. So that I can research further and more specify the site plan for technical side.

I have been researched on following things:

1. Mainly using Flash MX professional to create a high standard and a stylish web site. (I will research how the flash site connect to a database system)
2. Content management system is a crucial selling point (I will research about a general terms, specifications and realization of CMS)
3. Choosing a domain name, which can support our client demands. (I will look at availabilities of a potential domain name)
4. Solution for front-end site and back-end site (I will research which solution is the most appropriate for this project)

Including those points, I am going to carry on my research on security, e-commerce, and legal issues. Besides, I need to consider a minimum system requirement, a bandwidth, speed and limitation of a server. Apart from that, we need to decide a concept as soon as possible followed by a detailed team schedule for the project to implicate further development.

1. I need to make sure the domain name has been chosen and registered correctly.

3. I need to act as intermediary representing any concerns and issues of technical personnel to the client.

Project manager control the whole team of working, the role should choose right persons of the team, find right aim and objective of the whole project, and make and check schedule for every team mate’s every day work. Normally, in the real world, the work of concept also belongs to project manager’s work, but here, we could discuss the concept by our group. Design/Creative Management

Here is my role description:

DESIGN MANAGEMENT:
Responsible for ‘look and feel’ of product.

-Core Concept - WHOLE GROUP

-Outline Design
-Screen design
-List of templates and assets that would be needed
-Design and produce Proposal Book
-Define the styles (fonts, sizes etc) for team to use for their parts of proposal book (tech, financial etc)

Today's team meeting

We had the second meeting today to discuss the project and division of role. We agreed on following decision so far.

We considered choosing between the Elite car and the Shot-end. Through the team meeting we agreed on to choose the Elite car because it seems rather reasonable and realistic brief than other briefs. We also believed the Elite car project give us opportunities to learn a real business experience.

In addition to the decision, we managed to divide each member’s role initially. We tried to make sure each member’s role is not overlap with previous project.

Here is the division of the leading and supporting role.
